The Accursi Tower, also known as the Clock Tower, is one of the most famous monuments among the citizens of Bologna and tourists, thanks to its medieval appearance and its position overlooking the entire Piazza Maggiore, offering unique views and glimpses. Once again open to the public, it is now possible to take a closer look at the mechanical clock, the beautiful rooms inside, and the entrance under Palazzo d’Accursio.
The Bologna Clock Tower: the origin of the name Torre Accursi
The original name of Torre Accursi derives from Accursio, a jurist from Florence who built his own house – of enormous dimensions – which at the time included a school with an entrance towards the piazza and a tower in the corner. The tower was later incorporated into Accursio’s residence, which, shortly after the owner’s death, was purchased by the newly expanding Municipality of Bologna, which subsequently made it its home.
